Retaining your full licence assessment
An assessment to retain your full licence (without conditions) must be completed using a standardised (set) assessment route. You will be given instructions to drive around a route designed to replicate the challenges you face as a full licence holder. The location of this assessment is determined by whether a route is available in your area, and whether both the OT and driving instructor can attend your location. Most of our open assessments are completed from our Boronia office. We have, however, developed and have access to multiple compliant assessment routes in various localities.
Your OT will advise where your on road test will take place at the time of your off road assessment.
Local area assessment
A local area assessment is a licence that restricts drivers to a specified radius from home. This licence test is completed from your home and involves driving to your usual destinations, as well as to some set driving tasks mandated by VicRoads. This type of assessment is completed for drivers who already drive in their local area, or for those who may drive more safely if restricted. The decision about whether to complete a local area test will be discussed at the end of the off road test. Although this is your decision, your OT will be able to help guide you regarding which assessment type may best suit your needs in order to keep you driving safely.
Annual reassessment
If you have a medical condition that may change over time and impact your driving performance, you may be asked to undertake an annual medical assessment. You may also be asked to have a further OT driving assessment to monitor your ongoing fitness to drive. VicRoads will send you a notification in the mail if this is indicated.
Heavy vehicle and motorbike assessment
You may have previously held a commercial vehicle licence to drive a truck or bus for which stricter medical standards apply. If you wish to retain your heavy vehicle or motorbike licence you may need to undertake additional assessment following your driving test. You can discuss this with your OT at the time of the assessment. VicRoads will remove the commercial vehicle licence if you decide that you no longer wish to hold this and your licence will convert to a car only.
Other conditions
In some circumstances, licence conditions may be recommended to promote safe driving and allow you to continue to drive despite a reduction in skill. These conditions will be marked as an X or V on the conditions section of your licence. You may already have an S condition to wear glasses while driving listed on your licence.
Examples of X conditions your OT may recommend following your assessment are:
* Prior to your assessment VicRoads may have placed a temporary X condition on your licence indicating that you may only drive in a dual controlled vehicle with a driving instructor for the purposes of the assessment. If successful with your test this condition will be lifted to enable you to drive independently.
