Occupational therapy driving assessment services

TRAFFIC STOP Program

As an extension of our potential to drive program for learners with a disability, we now offer the opportunity for learners and newly licensed drivers to participate in our Traffic Stop Program (TSP). This innovative program offers real life practical experiences at an off-road facility to engage learners and newly licensed drivers in simulated Police interactions to help prepare them for independent driving. 


The program includes: 

· A police education session to help learners and newly licensed drivers understand the need for traffic stops and how to best communicate and manage these situations.

· Practical ‘real life’ experiences in a safe and supportive environment to help learners and newly licensed drivers engage in traffic stop situations. Examples of this include breath testing, accident scenarios, driver checks etc. 

· Assistance with the development of practical strategies for the learner to help manage traffic stops when driving independently.

· An opportunity to help break down barriers and preconceived ideas about police interactions to reduce anxiety, overwhelm & support positive and productive interactions.

· Providing opportunities to break down barriers and educate police regarding management of on road traffic stops with drivers who have a disability.


This program is run in conjunction with OT Driving Assessment Services and Victoria Police and uses specialised driving instructors to engage in real life ‘traffic stops’. It is conducted at the METEC driver training facility located in Bayswater North. The program runs on weekends on an as needs basis.


Support for this program

The research shows that that people with Autism are largely dissatisfied with their interactions with police and are often reluctant to report their autism during interactions (Kaaren Haas and Vicki Gibbs 2020 ARCAP). There is support for the implementation of education initiatives to improve awareness amongst police to enable improvement in these interactions. This education should involve interaction with the autistic people (Salerna-Ferrara & Fuller 2021).
